Two
buildings located on 112 West North Avenue and 1112-16 Arch Streets in
Pittsburgh provide homes for 8 families. Both properties are adjacent to
the New Hope UM Church (formerly Allegheny Church). The apartments give
a comfortable shelter for low income persons who meet eligibility
guidelines devised by Housing and Urban Development Department of the
federal government. The guidelines are administered by the Housing
Authority of the City of Pittsburgh. Church Union staff members manage
and maintain the apartments and administer the financial affairs of the
apartments. It is an almost break-even proposition for Church Union.
Considerable energy and resources
have been invested in the buildings that were acquired and renovated in
1980. Not only have services been provided for people with great needs,
but it has taken a lot of financial wherewithal and leverage to initiate
and sustain the apartments. These attractive units have been made
appealing to the sight, and lend charm to the neighborhood.
The West North Avenue facility is
known as the Wrenshall Apartments and is named after William Wrenshall
III who was a Church Union Board member and leader. He was the first
chairperson of the Methousing North Board of Directors. Bill
Wrenshall’s ancestors were among the first Methodists in the Pittsburgh
region.
