Each Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday of
every week in the year, up to 90 people receive a nutritious meal at the
former Allegheny Church (now New Hope) on Pittsburgh’s north side.
Volunteers from Allegheny County congregations prepare and serve the
food under the direction of Clara Behr, herself a volunteer and a member
of the New Hope Church. This unheralded project, sponsored by the
United Methodist Church Union, is testimony to the dramatic importance
of volunteers in Christian service. Since its beginning in 1880, the
Church Union has been the instrument and conduit for such service in
many places and diverse forms.
